The secluded sand dunes of Mali near the remote village of Essakane, is no cultural desert. This is the site of one the world’s most unique musical events, Festival in the Desert.
Festival in the Desert has hosted renowned western artists, such as Jimmy Buffet, Robert Plant and Led Zepplin. Famous local and regional acts have included Toumani Diabate, Habib Koite, Bassekou Kouyate, Sekouba Bambino, the group Saharawi, and the late great Ali Farka Toure.
Attendees are treated to camel rides and observe the native Tuareg’s games, camel races, and displays of poetic and dancing skills.
